- look down

look sad or depressed.

ex) Why do you look so down, is everything ok?


- get canned

get fired = The person who got fired.

ex) I got canned at work because I was always late.

someone fired someone.

ex) The manager canned him for being late


- down the drain

wasted, lost and gone forever.

time/energy.money + down the drain

ex) I lost my job so now everything is down the drain.


- suck

something is terrible.

ex) It sucks losing your wallet.

get fired.

ex) I got sacked yesterday, now how will i make money.


- up to scratch

good enough.

not + up to scratch = not good enough


+) usually using in negative sentence

ex) Your work is not up to scratch, you had better improve.

someone isn't suited for something.

ex) That job isn't cut out for you, you better get a new one.

industry or type of work.

ex)  I would love to work in the field of medicine. They make a lot of money.

having contacts or knowing people is more important than having experience or skills

ex) Don't worry if you don't have experience, I'll get you a job. It's not what you know but who you know.


- foot in the door

get/be(v) one's foot in the door.

a way to start with a company or in an industry.

ex) I will help you get your foot in the door at getting a new job.


- keep your head above water

survive.

ex) It's hard keeping your head above water if you don't have a job.


- paid peanuts

paid very little.

ex) I was paid peanuts at my last job, I couldn't pay rent.


- things are looking up

things are getting better.

ex) I just got a new job, things are looking up.

show someone how to do something or train someone.

ex) If you don't know, I 'll show you the ropes.


- on the clock

being paid to do something. your employer is paying for your time.

ex) I'm on the clock at work until 5.


+) off the clock = you are not being paid to do anything

ex) I can't stay and help. I'm off the clock.

when there are strong emotions regarding a situation or subject.

ex) The situation was very tense so people were worried the protests could become violent.

ex) Now report cards are all digital


- pleasant(good)/ unpleasant(bad) + surprise

when you are extremely surprised

ex) I was very shocked to learn the news.

ex) I was shocked by how small the classroom was.

something that is extremely surprising

ex) It was very shocking for me

when there is a limited amount of applications that are approved

ex) There were only 700 spots left but i got one.


- deposit(n)

money that you pay to get someone to hold something or that you get back after a contract or lease is finished

ex) If the apartment isn't damaged, you will get your deposit back.


- protest(n/v)

a public demonstration against or in support of something.

ex) There were many protests on the weekend against the new tax.


- strike(n/v)

when workers refuse to go to work until they receive something that they want(like Salary, work conditions, benefits etc).

ex) The teachers went on strike a few years ago.


- grief(n)/grieve(v)

The feeling of sadness when someone passes away.

ex) I am still grieving for my friend.

ex) Dealing with grief is very difficult and sometimes a long process.


- approve(v)

when a back says that a loan or mortgage is possible

approve someone's + loan/mortgage

ex) The bank didn't approve their loan.


- down payment(n)

the money that you pay immediately on  something that you will not be able to pay outright.

ex) I want to buy a new car. I can make a $5,000 down payment on this $20,000 car. After that I will make $800 monthly payment.
